Winners of the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2017 announced
LONDON (28 February 2017) — National Geographic Traveller (UK) has announced the winners of its annual Photography Competition 2017, in partnership with CEWE PHOTOBOOK, today at Intrepid Travel in Brixton.
The grand-prize winner is Rashid Khaidanov, with his image of Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland. Rashid said, “At County Antrim’s Dunluce Castle, I had to move very quickly because the last train home left me little time. I found a very narrow rock with enough room for a tripod and just enough space to stand close to the camera, with a steep drop just behind me. While I quickly changed the filters and took pictures, I was so caught up in the moment I forgot about the drop and didn’t notice the cloudy sky. I went home disappointed that I hadn’t come away with a better shot, but when I inserted the memory card into the computer later, I saw this image. Suddenly, I remembered why this is one of my favourite places in Northern Ireland.â€
National Geographic Traveller group art editor, Chris Hudson, said of the grand-prize winner’s image: “Rashid’s image is a stunning entry and was unanimously the judges favourite across all the categories. He’s managed to capture an amazing level of detail, a brooding sky and a fantastic level of light all at the same time, while also creating a fantastic composition that really demonstrates the rugged landscape and its exposure to the sea.â€
