This week’s top travel trends

(20 September): Here are three travel trends we’ve noticed this week:

Around the world in 50 road trips

Moneybarn has ranked the 50 best road trips around the world, considering key factors including affordability, safety and tourism. Out of all the itineraries, Cairns to Cape Tribulation gets the gold medal, followed by the Atlantic Highway and Canada’s Icefields Parkway. The findings also show which road trips score best in specific areas: a trip to Norway’s West Coast could be ideal if safety is the biggest concern, while if keeping the cost of campervan hire down is a priority, the Alcan Highway in Canada might be the best choice.

London set for record hotel openings in 2020

Almost 8,000 hotels rooms across 65 new hotels are set to open in London next year, representing the largest number of openings the capital has ever seen in a single year. According to data from STR, new hotel room openings have soared from 3,222 in 2010 to 7,995 in 2020, meaning that in 10 years London’s overall hotel room capacity has increased by 41%. Total additions to the London hotel market across 2019 and 2020 are expected to reach 121 hotels with 14,840 rooms — a record two-year period.

Mini adventurers head to North Africa

According to Thomas Cook’s 2020 travel trends predictions, based on UK booking data and customer insight, mini adventures in North Africa will continue to grow in popularity next year. The region has been attracting an increasing number of travellers in 2019: bookings to Tunisia for the summer more than doubled compared to last year, while winter bookings are already up 50% compared to 2018. Looking ahead to next summer, the country shows no sign of slowing down, with overall bookings up 25% year-on-year.
