The Masterclasses March 2023 – travel photography tips we learnt on the second day

The Masterclasses by returned in March 2023 with a series of one-hour writing and photography sessions.

After talking the audience through a beginner’s guide to travel photography on day one, the focus on the second evening turned to picking the right tools for the job.

Moderated by UK-based photographer Greg Funnell, our panel of experienced photographers covered everything from the best camera bodies and lenses for travel to the power of leaning on local knowledge to find the best locations and subjects.

Here are three tips shared during the session:

  1. Never underestimate the importance of preparation and knowing your gear. Yulia Denisyuk, an award-winning travel photographer and writer, explained, “Preparation is key to everything. Before going on any trip, be very comfortable with where everything is on your camera – that way, you can give yourself as much time as possible when you’re out there on assignment.”
  2. While some photographers like to travel light, taking a full bag of gear could be the right approach for others. Dikpal Thapa, an award-winning travel photographer from Nepal, explained why he prefers the latter. “I like to travel with all my gear — both bodies and all my lenses,” he explained. “They’re heavy, but I don’t want to miss anything when I’m travelling — I want to take as many pictures as I can without regretting that I didn’t bring all my lenses with me.”
  3. Be sure to know what you want to shoot before you travel. Moderator Greg Funnell agreed with the panellists when he advised, “Do your research. Never underestimate the power of hiring a local fixer — they’re worth their weight in gold, and you’re employing somebody locally. Reach out and try to find people who live in the places you’re travelling to.”
