National Geographic Traveller (UK) announces its Photography Competition 2018 winners
LONDON (1 March 2018) — National Geographic Traveller (UK) has announced the winners of its prestigious Photography Competition 2018, in association with Billingham.
The grand prize winner is Renato Granieri, with his image of king penguins in South Georgia. Renato wins a six-night wildlife photography adventure in the Carpathian Mountains, courtesy of Tatra Photography.
Chris Hudson, art director of National Geographic Traveller (UK), said of the grand prize winner’s image: “This entry stood out from the first moment we saw it because of the stark white background, which emphasises the extreme the environment in which these penguins live. There is, however, an element of tenderness in the image, which contrasts with this, and in the composition Renato has managed to capture a touching moment with exceptional technical and compositional skill.â€
The winners are:
Grand prize winner: King penguins in South Georgia by Renato Granieri
Portfolio: Elements by Daniel Burton
Action: Dog sledding in Svalbard, Norway by Stuart Dunn
People: Hunter with his golden eagle in western Mongolia by Simon Morris
Urban: Dog at cafe window in Lower Manhattan, New York by John White
Nature: King penguins in South Georgia by Renato Granieri
Video: Lost in Cuba by Timur Tugalev
The Portfolio winner, meanwhile, will experience a twin-centre break in Qatar, staying at the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel and Banana Island Resort by Anantara; and the winners in the other categories each receive a Billingham bag.
The winning shots were displayed at an exhibition dedicated to the competition finalists at wallacespace in Covent Garden, London, and have been published in a coffee table-style photo book. The winning photos can also be seen in a photography feature in the April 2018 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK), on sale 1 March 2018, priced £4.20.
National Geographic Traveller (UK) launched its annual photography competition in August 2011. This year, UK photographers were invited to submit their entries in one of six categories: Action; Nature; People; Urban; Portfolio; and Video.
